What Do You Want in Your Next Role?

One of the most common interview questions is, “What do you want in your new role?” It’s a good idea to think about this before starting your job search.

It’s time to focus on you. As Assistants, this isn’t something we often prioritize, but when looking for a new role, it’s essential to reflect on what you truly want.

Asking yourself this question not only helps you determine which jobs to apply for but also prepares you for the interview process and everything that comes next.

Here are a few questions to help you identify what you want from your next role:

Do You Enjoy What You’re Doing Now?

Is the Assistant role the right fit for you?

It’s important to ask yourself this question every time you begin a new job search. The Assistant role isn’t for everyone and may not always align with where you are in life.

Who Do You Look Up To?

This is such an important question to consider. If you have a clear career path and goals, that’s fantastic. If you don’t, it can feel more uncertain.

Think about Assistants you’ve worked with—past or present—whom you admire. Who stood out as someone who excelled in the role? What made them successful? What did you admire about their approach? Did they have a strong partnership with their Executive?

Identifying someone you can emulate can help clarify what you want and remind you that your goals are achievable.

What Makes You Happy?

It’s crucial to find a role that brings you joy. We spend so much time working that it’s important, whenever possible, to be in a job that makes us happy.

Think about the aspects of the Assistant role that bring you satisfaction and pursue a job description filled with those tasks and challenges. Don’t settle for less—seek a role that aligns with what truly makes you happy.

What Do You Want Your Day to Look Like?

This question can help clarify your career goals if you’re unsure of your next steps.

Picture your ideal workday. Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment, or do you prefer a slower, steady workflow? Do you enjoy interacting with others throughout the day, or do you prefer a quieter office setting?

Would you like to work from home, in a hybrid setup, or fully in-office? Envision everything you want from your next role. While compromises may come later, start by identifying your ideal situation.

Do You Want to Advance Your Career?

If you’re looking for more challenges, a higher salary, or the opportunity to work with a more senior Executive, consider how you want to grow in your career. What will motivate you to move forward?

Do You Want a Better Work-Life Balance?

On the other hand, you might want to leave a fast-paced role for one that offers more freedom and a healthier work-life balance. Reflecting on this will help you narrow down your priorities for your next position.

Do You Want More Responsibility or Creative Tasks?

Think about your ideal job description.

What tasks and responsibilities would excite you? Would you prefer working with a CEO, a C-suite Executive, or a team? Do you enjoy running projects, managing staff, or finding creative solutions? Or do you thrive in roles that involve detailed systems and procedures? Identify the type of work that energizes you.

    Define What You Want

Before starting your search for a new Assistant role, take time to define what you want from your next position and what your long-term aspirations are—not just in terms of salary but also in terms of what you enjoy in your work.

These questions can help you envision your ideal role. Knowing what kind of job you truly want and understanding your priorities requires thought and reflection, but it’s crucial to finding the perfect fit.

Taking the time to reflect will also boost your confidence during the hiring process. You’ll understand what you’re looking for and why a particular role aligns with your goals.

When faced with big decisions, ask yourself:

    • What am I looking for in my new role?
    • Do I enjoy what I’m currently doing?
    • How could my skills be applied to something more fulfilling?

By pausing to reflect, you’ll gain clarity about your abilities, experience, and professional goals.
